The Geology of the Oriente Basin, geodynamic implications

The Oriente Basin of Ecuador, are part of the asymmetric foredeep portion of the present day sub-Andean retro-arc foreland system . Currently, more than 10 BBO of recoverable reserves have been discovered representing one of the most prolific systems of western South America.  The Oriente Basin consists of two physiographic–structural domains which have been independent from each other since Mio-Pliocene times .  Its western subandean zone constitutes the wedge top depozone of the retroforeland basin system on the eastern edge of the Andean orogen. It is bounded to the east by the deformation thrust front that restrained from the second domain, the vast Oriente foredeep basin, which extends eastern to the current forebulge position of this foreland system, the Iquitos arch. The Oriente Basin preserves a thick sedimentary infill ranging in age from Paleozoic to Quaternary overlying a Pre-Cambrian cratonic basement. Structurally, it is characterized by overprinted structures. Pre-Cretaceous compressional and extensional systems, inherited respectively from late Paleozoic paleo-fold thrust structures and Triassic paleo-rift structures, both have been tectonically inverted along the basin since late Cretaceous.

23 years of international Oil Industry experience in exploration. Expert in numerous basins and regions worldwide, including: South East Asia and North Western Australia; Latin America (sub-Andean, Foreland Basins and offshore basins); GOM (Mexico); South Atlantic Margin (Brazil-West Africa).
Geology Professor at several universities : San Francisco de Quito, Escuela Politécnica Nacional y University of Idaho. Experimented mentor and research advisor.
