A Saturday full of activities at Yachay Tech University

Talks, games, and activities were held at Yachay Tech on Saturday, April 21 at the FLISoL 2018 and the “One day in Yachay Tech” events with the Animal Libre NGO.

On Saturday, April 21, 2018, Yachay Tech University welcomed different speakers, interested public and attendees for two major events: the Latin American Festival of Free Software Installation (FLISol) 2018, at Yachay Tech, and the Chilean Non-Governmental Organization “Animal Libre”. The first event was organized by the Free Software Club, and it was aimed at promoting the use of this Software by allowing the public to know its philosophy, scope, progress, and development. The second event was organized by the students of the Animal Welfare Club and sought to inform about animals rights and all the alternatives that human beings have to create an adequate environment of coexistence with other species.

FLISoL is the largest Free Software promotion event in Latin America. During this edition, the second one to take place on our campus, the audience was able to enjoy lectures by different speakers. It also had a video game tournament; an Ethical Hacking workshop and a Hacking competition under the Capture The Flag (CTF) modality. However, the most important event was a space for the installation of Free Software for those who wish to be part of this philosophy.

The FLISoL talks were given by several professors from Yachay Tech University and their guests. Andreas Griewank, Ph.D., Dean of the School of Mathematical Sciences and Information Technology, opened the day that continued with lectures by Cédric M. Campos, Ph.D., Levis Zerpa, Ph.D., Francesc Castro, Ph.D., and Rigoberto Fonseca, Ph.D., all faculty members from the same School. In addition, Andreas Vogel, Ph.D. attended the conferences. He is from the SAP company and was invited by the Dean. Finally, the event closed with the awards to the winners of the video game tournament and the winner of the CTF competition. This year, FLISoL was attended by about 80 people.

On the other hand, “A Day at Yachay Tech” with Animal Libre began with a presentation of the philosophy of veganism, through talks given by volunteers of the NGO. The event also had a vegan cooking workshop and a vegan Pambamesa that all attendees shared.

Animal Libre is an international NGO founded in Chile, in 2010. It is aimed at accelerating the transformation processes towards a society that sees animals in a moral sense. They do it through constant activism in promoting veganism and animal rights. It is present in five (5) South American countries (Chile, Argentina, Peru, Paraguay, and Ecuador) and has more than 20 work teams in these countries.
