Yachay Tech University aims to improve collaboration channels with European universities
January 9, 2018
Carlos Castillo-Chávez, Rector of Yachay Tech University, will hold meetings with universities in the United Kingdom and Belgium and with the European Union Commission responsible for Latin America. The objective of these meetings is to establish mechanisms for bilateral cooperation in research projects and academic exchanges that promote the access of Ecuadorian students and professors to European universities; as well as to encourage participation in education projects financed by the European Union and increasing the budget allocated to these programs in Latin America. The meetings will be held between January 9 and 16, 2018.
The visit begins on January 9 in London. Carlos Castillo-Chávez will have a meeting with Ambassador Carlos Abad Ortiz and Ecuadorian Ph.D. students. Later, Castillo-Chávez and Abad will visit the White City Incubator and the Dyson School of Design Engineering, both from the Imperial College. The meetings were organized by Inty Grønneberg, a Senescyt scholar and researcher of the Dyson School of Design Engineering. The visit will continue on January 11 with a meeting between the Rector of Yachay Tech and several authorities from University of Edinburgh, including: Dr. Steve Morrison, Rector; Dr. Charlie Jeffery, Professor of Politics and Senior Vice-Principal; and Dr. Soledad Garcia-Ferrari, Dean of Latin America and Director of the Centre for Latin American Studies.
On January 12, Carlos Castillo-Chávez will travel to Brussels, Belgium, where he will meet members of the European Union Commission responsible for Latin America, the Vice-rector of University of Brussels and with 1 Bioengineering faculty from Université Catholique de Louvain. The objective of the meetings is to establish collaboration channels through programs such as Erasmus + and Horizon 2020. In addition, it aims to find opportunities for academic and research exchanges.
The meetings in Europe will end on January 15 and 16 in Bristol, England. The rector of Yachay Tech will attend a meeting of CHAMPS, a research project formed by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council UK, where he will give a conference on biology population models and its use in the epidemiology study, where they will address models and approximations for the dynamic analysis of the vector, STDs and contagious diseases.

Carlos Castillo-Chávez, Ph.D.:
He got his PhD in Mathematics from the University of Wisconsin Madison. He has written around 250 publications and dozens of books, school texts, research papers, and edited volumes. His research is focused on the interface of the evolution of diseases, national security, epidemiology, addiction and sustainability.
CHAMPS:
A research project that involves Bristol University, Cardiff, Imperial College and Leeds of the UK. This project is implemented with grant funds from the Council of Research of Physical Sciences and Engineering of UK. In English, the name of the project is Chemistry and Mathematics in the Phasic Space. The last term, Phasic Space (in Mathematics or Physics) refers to space where all possible states of a dynamic system are represented. The investigation of the project seeks to provide new models that stir up the understanding of the chemical transformation with impacts in the industry that depend on the chemical change: environmental sciences, pharmaceutical, and energy sectors.
Biology of populations and epidemiology:
The Biology of populations is the field that uses mathematical tools and studies the growth and evolutions of a species, moreover the interaction among populations of different species. On the other hand, Epidemiology is the area that studies the distribution, frequency, predictions, and control of factors related to health and diseases in human populations.
