Biografía

Marco (Wayra) Simbaña likes to analyze the linking between geology and the ancestral knowledge for the generation of sustainable development of a society. He is a geologist from the Central University of Ecuador (UCE) and has a master’s degree in Environmental Geology and Geological Resources by the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM), Spain. He has worked as a field geologist in the National Geological Mining Metallurgical Institute of Ecuador “INIGEMM”. Where, he was part of the investigation group of non-metallic resources and worked in the area of geological mapping in the South of Ecuador (Loja).

Also, he has worked as a Researcher Professor at Ikiam Regional Amazon University, in the Earth Sciences and Water Faculty, where he has instructed courses in Petrography, Geochemistry, Mineralogy, Geodynamics, Volcanology, and Mineral Deposits. He was the coordinator of the Napo Sumaco Geopark, UNESCO aspirant and the Director of the Napo Sumaco Geopark Foundation. Actually, he is working at Yachay Tech University as Researcher and Professor in the School of Earth Sciences, Energy and Environment where he teaches geology.

 

Research Interest

Wayra has focused his investigation in the social geology area in which he has dedicated to analyze the used of geological materials as sustainable resource. He has been working in geological evaluation of the geosites of Napo Sumaco Geopark. Above all, analyze geochemically, petrographically and structurally the igneous rocks. It also studies the socio-economic and environmental impact of mining in the Napo River hydrographic basin.
