GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Mathematics
The school consists of two areas: the Department of Mathematics and the Department of Computational Sciences and Engineering. We strive to provide great flexibility in the last two years of curriculum, allowing students to explore their own interests, either within the school or in other disciplines of Yachay Tech. All Yachay Tech programs start with a common core that is covered during the first two years. This includes a solid introduction to physics, chemistry, biology and geology. The third year consists of compulsory school courses, some of which are shared between departments. The fourth year contains half in compulsory courses, and half of elective courses, and the fifth year includes an internship and a final project leading to a thesis.

PROFESSIONAL ELECTIVES

PURE MATHEMATICS: Abstract Algebra *, Differential Geometry *, Complex Analysis, Number Theory, Algebraic Geometry, Operator Theory, Topology. APPLIED MATHEMATICS: Continuous optimization *, Numerical methods for PDE's *, Optimal control, Operations research, Discrete optimization, Inverse problems, Financial mathematics. HYBRID: Stochastic processes *, Variational calculus *, Theory of approximation, Harmonic analysis. These subjects will be offered annually. Of the ten professional electives, students must take at least three courses of pure mathematics and at least three courses of applied mathematics. Hybrid electives can count as pure mathematics or applied mathematics. That leaves the possibility of taking at most four additional courses in MAT or in another discipline.
