Santiago Santamaría

Biografía

Santiago Santamaría completed his third level studies at the Escuela Politécnica Nacional (Quito, Ecuador), where he received his degree in Geological Engineering. His undergraduate thesis was done in collaboration with the Instituto Geofísico of the same institution. In his study, he compiled geochronological information of the Ecuadorian volcanic arc to evaluate the eruptive frequency in the country. Thanks to his research, he was accepted at the University of Paris-Saclay (France) to pursue his doctoral studies in the fields of geochronology and volcanology being granted in the ” International Graduate Scholarship Program 2018″ of SENESCYT. His research proved evidence that volcanism in Ecuador is much younger than thought, showing an increase in activity since the last 600 000 years. He worked on the standardization of quaternary volcanic deposits and the updating of the geological maps of Ecuador at the Instituto de Investigación Geológico y Energético, leading one of the geological mapping groups. He currently works as a professor and researcher at Yachay Tech University.

Santiago Santamaría is accredited and categorized as “Investigador Agregado 2” at SENESCYT. He is member of the International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth’s Interior (IAVCEI) and the Latin American Association of Volcanology (ALVO).

Research Interests

Santiago Santamaria’s research has focused on the fields of volcanology and geochronology, which combined have allowed him to conduct studies in eruptive history and evolution of volcanic systems, stratigraphy and description of volcanic deposits, analysis of eruptive frequency, geological mapping in volcanic areas, geochemistry of magmas, among others. In addition, Santiago has collaborated in studies of biostratigraphy and regional geology for the understanding of the geodynamic evolution of the Ecuadorian margin. Santiago also contributes as a reviewer to several academic journals in the areas of geology, geochronology and geodynamic evolution.
