In order to promote affirmative actions in the field of safety and health at work, the General Directorate of University Welfare, through its Occupational Health and Safety Unit, carried out the VII Conference for the World Day of Safety and Health at Work 2023, in collaboration with various public and private organizations in the provinces of Imbabura and Carchi.

On this occasion, the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador Sede-Ibarra, the Ecuadorian Institute of Social Security – Occupational Risks and Yachay Tech University worked together to give different talks that addressed issues related to the international proposal issued by the International Organization Labor – ILO, which raises discussion on the fundamental right to a safe and healthy job.

The university authorities were enthusiastic and joyful when taking part of the several activities that were carried out with different entities of the territory to promote the work of the General Directorate of University Welfare. Judith Vanegas, Academic Vice Rector of Yachay Tech, claimed: “The World Day for Safety and Health at Work is a crucial date celebrated every April 28 to raise awareness in society about the importance of guaranteeing safe and healthy working conditions for all workers. On this day, the fundamental right of workers to enjoy a safe work environment is recognized, as well as the need to prevent work-related accidents and illnesses.”

In order to promote a culture of prevention and improve working conditions, various activities were carried out during three days. These included awareness campaigns, training, inspections, informative talks, prevention days, management of safety protocols and an earthquake drill with the presence of students, faculty and administrative staff of Yachay Tech.

At the end of the conference, valuable opinions were collected from the attendees who supported these events and highlighted the work of the universities in supporting education and training on Safety and Health at work. Participants were welcomed by the different institutions and encouraged to continue with this mission during the next events.
