5 teams from Yachay Tech participated in the Yamor Student’s Contest  

The National Student Development and Technological Innovation Competition was held at the Simón Bolívar Park, in the city of Otavalo, during the 2017 Yamor festivities on Saturday, September 09, 2017, in the category of universities. The contest was for high schools and universities. It began on September 8 with the high school category, in Casa de las Juventudes de Otavalo. The objective of the contest was to promote technological development and social innovation in young people. The prize for each category was a monetary incentive for the continuation of the projects presented in the contest. Five teams from Yachay Tech University participated in the contest. In addition, Carlos Castillo-Chavez will gave a speech during the opening ceremony.

The contest was organized by the Mayor’s office and the Municipality of Otavalo in cooperation with Yachay City, the Ministry of Industry and Productivity (MIPRO in Spanish) and the National Secretariat of Education, Science and Technology (SENESCYT in Spanish). The projects presented by Yachay Tech University are:

Development of a software to manage and maintain medical equipment:

The project is developed by Lorena Mediavilla. It is aimed at the Cotacachi community and its objective is to ensure safety and make the preventive or corrective maintenance on equipment of the Asdrúbal de la Torre Hospital easier, thus improving the healthcare system of Cotacachi.

ANIMATURA: Promoting reading and arts in children through the animation of their drawings.

This project was prepared by Carlos Bustamante, Kevin Chamorro, and Ángel Rojas. Its objective is to promote reading in children through the digital animation of children’s drawings after reading activities. It is for the Urcuquí community.

“Smart Trash Bin” – Technological container for plastic bottles.

It was designed by students Verónica Quilumba, Byron Tipán, María Rosa Preciado, Vanessa Hinojosa, and Carolina Ibarra. It will be useful for the university community and the Urcuquí canton. The project consists of creating a trash bin to crush plastic bottles to make recycling easier. The team has a functional prototype already.

Solenoid motor, a green alternative.

The creator of this project is Alejandro Freire. The main objective of the project is to develop a motor that does not damage the environment. The motor proposed by Alejandro works with alternate current using solenoid magnets that are placed on the upper end of the pistons.

Autonomous movement system to spread organic repellent

It was designed by Jordy Sarmas, Danna Castillo, Diana Pereira, Dolores Parra, Araceli Granja, The objective is to reduce the number of flies in the food stores, and at the same time prevent the transmission of diseases caused by flies. It is aimed for the Urcuquí canton. The students created an organic repellent based on a component found in eucalyptus leaves and it was combined with the dissemination system of the product.

The categories of the contest were related to the type of technological development of the projects, which included products and services, processes, marketing/organization, social innovation, businesses challenges and mobile apps. Additionally, the call included areas of application in different strategic sectors where the project had to be based on.
