Yachay Tech students participate in App contest

Fernando Zhapa, Evelyn García Esteban Lazo and Anthony Ramos will travel to Cali to present their App Yupana

Four students from Yachay Tech University will travel to Cali, Colombia, on November 7, 2017 to participate in the final stage of the University App Tournament “TuApp2017.org”. The students will present the App Yupana to do mathematical calculations. It is aimed at high school students. They are the only Ecuadorian team participating among 40 teams from Colombia, Peru, Mexico and Chile. The contest will be held from November 8 to 10, 2017.

The Yupana team is interdisciplinary, even though all of them are studying their sixth semester. Fernando Zhapa, who created and programmed the project, studies Information Technology; Evelyn García and Esteban Lazo, who study Geology and Nanotechnology Engineering respectively, are responsible for the application´s design; and Anthony Ramos, who was responsible for the research of the necessary mathematical theory for the application, studies Physics.

All of them agreed that the teamwork has been simple and productive because it has allowed them to improve the project from their own knowledge and collaborate in an organized manner to take care of every detail of Yupana.
The App has a scientific calculator, an evaluator and a polynomial solver, a system of equations solver , a tool of basic statistics and a theoretical guide to help users to solve operations without the app help. The operation of Yupana is quite simple; you can see it in the video below:

For the creators of Yupana, the biggest challenge was the design of the business model for the App. The revenue will be raised through the design of a desktop software with more complex uses that will be aimed at higher level academics, in addition to other types of more common sources of income such as advertising. This was only one of the requirements that they had to complete to be able to pass to the final of the TuApp.org contest. Yupana was one of the 40 finalists of more than 120 participants.
